Mike and I decided to do something crazy/exhilarating/scary.
Around Christmastime, we decided to say, “Yes!” to a job offer Mike got in a place neither of us had ever even been. When he was asked to interview, the idea of moving to a city on the Atlantic Ocean felt like the craziest thing we could do. And then when he got asked to do a second interview, we looked and each other, laughed, and said, “This seriously might happen.” And when it did happen, and we decided to go for it, we also decided to come down and check it out before we blindly moved down in May. So, here we are. Our spring break from university started, we packed up the car, and drove 16 or so hours to Myrtle Beach, SC.
My biggest fear, and I think Mike’s as well, was getting down here and absolutely hating it. When we arrived, we were both very keen on just driving around and checking out everything that is down here. On our first full day here, we walked the beach looking for shells, and spent a major part of our day driving around and just seeing what there is here. Myrtle Beach (as I read online) is a long-reaching series of beaches and areas along the Atlantic that is 60 miles long. So, basically, there is a lot to see. Our first impression of the area is that it is obviously very tourist-centered, but there are quaint neighborhoods and areas that are not as busy as others. I’m sure we will explore more once we permanently move down and become pseudo locals.
The next day, we decided to go to a few tourist-y places that actually turned out to be really fun. We visited Alligator Adventure, where we saw a real life 50 year old crocodile that was 20 feet long and 2000 pounds. It was as unreal as it sounds. There were so many turtles, snakes, alligators, and birds. We spent a good couple hours there, definitely worth visiting if you are in the area! After that, we dined at Dick’s, a restaurant where “everything is served with a side of sarcasm.” The waiter described his job as awesome because he “gets to say everything other restaurant servers wish they could to guests.” They make ‘personalized’ hats, which were honestly too inappropriate to be mentioned. It was a hilarious time and I think if you can enjoy your lunch along with a fun drink and a few laughs, then all is well. We leave in a couple days and overall, Mike and I can definitely picture ourselves here a few months from now.
Its been 12 years since I was at Myrtle Beach. We, (my significant and myself) will be there for about 4 days of golf (vacation) the middle of May; can’t wait. The last and only time I was there, I didn’t get to play golf, my kids were young at the time, so it was a family vac. This should be different, can go anywhere.
